SPRINGFIELD – The 2014 PDL season kicked off on Saturday night for the Demize. Springfield hosted the Des Moines Menace, who jumped out to an early 2-0 lead behind goals from Sean Hoek and Nico Wright in the seventh and ninth minutes, respectively.
Des Moines was aggressive in the first half, resulting in several corner kicks and shots on Demize goalkeeper, Yuta Nomura. The Menace’s opening goal came of Ralph Lundy’s corner kick, which was finished on frame by Hoek. Two minutes later, Wright carried the ball up the left flank and used a burst of speed to dash past the defender and score unassisted on Nomura.
After the initial bevy of shots by the away side, the Demize defense settled in and began to lock down the opposition’s attack. The remaining 81 minutes saw no goals, ending coach Ian Henry’s debut with the club with the loss.
On the attack, Brandon Menzonelli led Springfield with two shots in the match, followed by a shot apiece by Paul Scheipeter and Jack Griffin.
These two sides played to a 1-1 draw in the opening game of the 2013 campaign.
Springfield will host WSA Winnipeg on Tuesday night. The 7:00 p.m. contest at Cooper 1 will be Winnipeg’s first match of the season and opportunity for the Demize to even their record. Fans will also have an opportunity to meet Demize players and coaches tonight (Monday, May 19) at The OLD CHICAGO PIZZA AND PASTA restaurant located at 2040 East Independence in Springfield.
